Collective Worship

"Collective worship in schools should aim to provide the opportunity for pupils to worship God, to consider spiritual and moral issues and to explore their own beliefs; to encourage participation and response, whether through active involvement in the presentation of worship or through listening to and joining in the worship offered; and to develop community spirit, promote a common ethos and shared values, and reinforce positive attitudes." - Collective Worship in Schools, Guidance for schools on providing a daily act of collective worship, Department for Education.

Collective Worship is a cherished opportunity, every day, for our school community to gather together in thanks, praise, joy, compassion, humility, awe and wonder. Collective Worship begins when pupils in Year Six collect their younger peers from their classrooms; accompany them to the school hall and remain with them throughout, acting as role models by supporting their involvement and understanding.

The lighting of a candle is accompanied by the words, "Jesus is the Light of the World"

Whilst Collective Worship is distinctively Anglican, our school community cherish and celebrate diversity. Through Collective Worship, pupils have the chance to learn about, and from, Christianity and other world religions and spiritual practices. Worship is typically dynamic, meaningful, interactive and memorable; providing a sense of oneness and an opportunity to explore and develop beliefs in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.

Each Friday, the week concludes with a 'Celebration Assembly'. On a class rota basis, parents and carers are invited to join the worship to celebrate the week's achievements and the achievements of the pupils both within and outside the school. A different class organise and host the assembly each week; choosing the theme and content of the worship, writing or selecting prayers and deciding what music they might like to include. A special 'Barrow Heart' certificate is awarded to a child in each class, in recognition of an act of kindness or good-citizenship and a 'Barrow Star' certificate is presented to celebrate academic effort and achievement. It's the perfect way to end a busy, Barrow week!

Links to the Church

As a CofE school Barrow aims to make this a core part of our school. We have a continuing mission to build links with the Church in the local and wider community. Information about Broseley Benefice can be found by clicking on this link. The school is supported in its collective worship by members of the Broseley group of churches and pupils and parents make regular visits to St. Giles church in Barrow and All Saints church in Broseley.
